There exist several myths around BPM. I have chosen six to identify, discuss and try to bust or confirm. The first few myths relate to the exact definition of BPM.
Myth 1: A myth describes BPM as a process improvement project where a project can be defined as having a definite end. BPM is, instead, a continuous undertaking through constant management of business processes and it is through the ongoing commitment that the benefits are gained. Myth busted!
Myth 2: Another myth states that BPM is a technology. However, BPM can be defined as a management practice focused on management and improvement of business process and neither of these activities require technology to be done. Myth busted!
Myth 3: There is a myth that explains that BPM is limited to workflow only. Although BPM was created as a workflow engine methodology for running business processes, it has evolved into a full life-cycle. Today, BPM tools include modelling, execution, reporting, monitoring, optimization and simulation functionality. Myth busted!
Other myths relate to how BPM affects the company.
Myth 4: The myth states that BPM always creates a radical change to the business. This is not always true because even though processes change, the change can be made in increments slowly over time. Myth busted!
Myth 5: Some cynics believe a myth that BPM is too expensive for the business. If the BPM specialists focus on the strategic processes then the result will be more work done by less people and they will soon recover any costs made for investment in tools or consultants. Myth busted!
A further myth relates to complexity.
Myth 6: The myth suggests that BPM is so complex that it can only be done by programmers. Some BPM tools help the everyday user, with web-based wizards and other functionality, to enable business users to accomplish their BPM goals and obtain real needs. IT will then combine and integrate these workflows into external systems. Myth busted!
I hope this article has helped you to become aware of some of the myths circulating about BPM and has even empowered you to go forth and dispel BPM myths rather than be another lost in the turmoil of mythology.
